Tungsten electrodes are used in TIG welding processes, where they act as a non-consumable electrode, generating an electric arc between the electrode and the base material. Tungsten is particularly suitable for this process due to its high thermal resistance, reaching a melting point of approximately 3,400 °C.

This type of electrode allows for precise control of the weld pool and a high-quality finish, and is commonly used in welding steel, stainless steel, aluminium, nickel and other technical materials. Its arc stability and cleanliness make it a suitable solution for industrial applications that require precision and uniformity.

Types of tungsten electrodes and selection criteria

Tungsten electrodes are classified according to their alloy and are usually identified by colour, which facilitates their selection according to the type of current and material to be welded. Among the most commonly used are:

  • Pure tungsten (green), mainly suitable for alternating current (AC) welding.
  • Electrodes with 2% thorium (red), used in direct current (DC) and also in AC.
  • Electrodes with 2% cerium (grey), versatile for AC and DC work.
  • Electrodes of lanthanum WL15 (gold) and 1% lanthanum (black), suitable for steel, aluminium, nickel and titanium in AC and DC.
  • WS2 electrodes (turquoise), designed for automated applications.
The selection must be made considering the type of material, the current used (AC or DC), the electrode diameter and the expected working intensity. Choosing the right electrode ensures arc stability, less wear and uniform welding in demanding technical applications.
